This dataset contains data from Sample 1 of a longitudinal study examining the interplay among math anxiety, math interest, math confidence, and math performance in early elementary school children in the United States. Data were collected across two waves during the [2015–2016] school year. In this dataset, wave 2 corresponds to Time 1 (T1) and wave 3 corresponds to Time 2 (T2); math performance was assessed at both timepoints, while math anxiety, interest, and confidence were assessed at T1.
The dataset includes child-level variables for the study's focal constructs. Math anxiety was measured with three parcels. Math interest was measured with a single parcel (MI1) comprising three items on children's interest in and liking of math. Math confidence was measured with two parcels (MC1 and MC2) comprising items on children's beliefs about their math ability and expected performance. Math performance was assessed at both T1 and T2 via a standardized math test. Demographic and covariate variables include standardized child age (in months) and child gender. Children were nested within classrooms, and a teacher identifier (teacherIDw2) is included to support modeling of this clustering.
All continuous variables are provided in standardized form. Gender is provided as a standardized variable (genderStandard), with values corresponding to girl and boy; users should consult the data dictionary for the exact coding direction before interpreting gender-related associations. Some math interest and math confidence items in Sample 1 were answered on different response anchors than other items in their respective scales; these differences are documented and were examined through sensitivity analyses in the associated publication.
