This study examines how receptive language ability predicts social-emotional competence (SEC) among 644 preschool children aged 3–6 years in rural China. Using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) and a standardized SEC scale, we explore the moderating roles of age and gender. Findings provide evidence on early developmental disparities in resource-limited settings, highlighting the dynamic links between language skills and socio-emotional adaptation in early childhood.
