Project: #DepoProvera, An analysis of the most popular TikTok videos about Medroxyprogesterone Acetate

TikTok is increasingly used for the exchange of health information. The accuracy of content on TikTok related to depot medroxyprogesterone acetate is poorly understood. The aim of this analysis was to describe, score, and understand information available on the most popular TikTok videos featuring the tag #depo and/or #depoprovera. We evaluated the top 100 most viewed videos tagged #depo or #depoprovera. We downloaded and compiled viewing, comments, likes, and share data on the 1000 most viewed TikTok videos with the tag #depo and/or #depoprovera. We then applied our inclusion criteria to the videos starting with the most-viewed video until we reached a sample size of 100 videos. Inclusion criteria required the videos to be publicly available, in the English language, and relevant to DMPA. Videos were categorized as personal experience, educational, reaction, humor, or other. We used the DISCERN scale to evaluate medical information quality on videos that made factual claims.
