We sought to understand the speech and language skills of children with nonsyndromic cleft palate with or without cleft lip (NSCP/L) by meta-analyzing results of the literature. Our first project characterized the difference in speech (i.e., consonant inventory, speech accuracy, and speech errors) and language (i.e., receptive and expressive) skills between young children (birth to 8;11) with and with NSCP/L. We also explored the impact of potential moderators. Our second project characterized the difference in pre-reading and general reading skills between school-aged children with and without NSCP/L. Our third project examined the relationship between consonant inventory and two language skills, expressive vocabulary and mean length of utterance, in children with NSCP/L between 18- and 39-months.
